Paraffernalia

Back in November 2003, the world famous BBC Big Band held a series of workshops in Gateshead for pupils in Gateshead schools.  Such was the interest and enjoyment the workshops created, it was decided to follow this up with a jazz day at the Dryden Centre.  Approximately 30 pupils attended that first session and Paraffernalia was created.

Staff

Paraffernalia is conducted and directed by Mr David Blakey with the support of Mrs Julia Watson and Mr Tom Rushton.

Membership

The band eventually had a regular membership of around 25 players and grew in confidence and ability.

Rehearsals

Paraffernalia rehearses at the Dryden Centre on Thursday: 6.30pm until 8.30pm (please see Contact Us for a map)

Repertoire

Paraffernalia plays classic swing/big band pieces by famous big band leaders, such as Glen Miller and Duke Ellington.  Over the last couple of years the band has leaned towards more modern styles including funk.

Concerts and Events

The band has twice been invited to The National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham and has performed regularly in The Great North Big Band Festival in Sunderland.  At this year’s festival, the band won two awards, Best Sax Section and Kris Park won a special award for his outstanding baritone sax playing.  In April 2008, the band recorded their first CD.
Players need to be at grade 4 + level to be in the band and membership is by invitation or teachers recommendation.
