Strings of the GYO
The Youth Orchestra effectively divides into a most attractive wind band and also a string ensemble. This was effectively deployed in a recent tour of Barcelona, when two ensembles performed at the same time in two different venues.
Staff
The Strings of the Gateshead Youth Orchestra is directed by Mr John Treherne MBE.
Membership
It must not be forgotten that the string section is the backbone of any symphony orchestra, and that is the prime thrust of this organisation. Membership is by teacher recommendation and invitation
Repertoire
Charles Avison, the great 18th Century Tyneside composer has left several works for strings, and many of these form part of the Youth Orchestra repertoire. Written for strings and harpsichord continuo, these link neatly with other works such as the Corelli Christmas Concerto, Bach’s D minor harpsichord concerto, and the Third Brandenburg Concerto. As well as this baroque repertoire, the strings enjoy playing contemporary repertoire, including colourful works by Clive Jenkins, Giovanni da Gigondas, and John Treherne who directs the ensemble.
Rehearsals
The Strings of the Gateshead Youth Orchestra rehearse every Tuesday evening during Gateshead Schools Terms 4.30-6.30pm at the Dryden Centre (please see Contact Us for a map)
Concerts and Events
Most recently the string ensemble performed at the opening of Newcastle’s new Charles Avison Library, and at The Sage Gateshead as part of The Gateshead Schools’ Music Service Showcase Concert. The Strings also join with the other members of The Gateshead Youth Orchestra to attend annual Educational Visits to Europe.
